Maxime Bernier Strengthens His Montreal Team

Ottawa, February 21, 2017 – Today, Conservative Party of Canada Leadership Candidate Maxime Bernier announced that Senator Larry Samith and former Minister of State for Immigration, the Honourable Gerry Weiner have pledged their support for his campaign.

“Conservatives must succeed in all regions of Canada in order for our movement to be successful. I have been in rural Canada, I have been in urban Canada, and all Canadians can agree on our principles of freedom, responsibility, fairness and respect. The endorsement of these two prominent Montrealers is very important and I am proud to have them on my team,” said Hon. Maxime Bernier.

Senator Larry Smith is a widely-respected figure in Quebec. He has played in the Canadian Football League for the Montreal Alouettes, and later served as that organization’s President. He was also Commissioner of the CFL. He also has extensive experience in the business world, including serving as Publisher of the Montreal Gazette. He was appointed to the Senate in 2010.

“In politics, much like in football, teamwork is important. Maxime is building a team all across Canada that is standing up for strong Conservative principles. He has the team and the plan to defeat Justin Trudeau in 2019 and to return Conservatives to Government. This will be good for Canada,” mentioned Senator Larry Smith.

The Honourable Gerry Weiner served as a Member of Parliament from 1984 to 1993. He served as Minister of State for Immigration and Minister of State for Multiculturalism, as well as Mayor of Dollard-des-Ormeaux and as a Montreal City Councillor. More recently, he has continued his private sector experience in the pharmaceutical industry.

“Leadership means defending your ideas with passion and conviction, no matter the audience and no matter the region of Canada. Over the past year Maxime has done precisely that, discussing his ideas in every corner of the country. His plan will make each and every Canadian more prosperous. That’s the right plan. And I am proud to support him,” said Former Minister Hon. Gerry Weiner.

These important additions build on the strong team of prominent Conservatives who have endorsed Bernier’s Leadership campaign. These include:

    Hon. Tony Clement, MP
    Jacques Gourde, MP
    Alupa Clarke, MP
    Tom Kmiec, MP
    Alex Nuttall, MP
    Dan Albas, MP
    Senator Nicole Eaton
    Senator Lynne Beyak
    Senator Stephen Greene
    Senator Ghislain Maltais
