40 Groups in Quebec Exhort JustinTrudeau
Not to make Kinder Morgan his Political Heritage
April 12, 2018, MONTRÉAL – Today, 40 citizen groups and organizations in Quebec wrote to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ministers Catherine McKenna and Jim Carr to urge them to immediately withdraw their support for the expansion project. Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Pipeline.
These groups, some of whom have for years been at the heart of the popular mobilization against the Energy East pipeline project, until it was canceled last fall, believe that the current crisis surrounding the Kinder Morgan issue concerns the entire population of Canada. They warn the Trudeau government not to make Kinder Morgan its political legacy. In February, an Angus Reid poll revealed that opposition to Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline was particularly strong among the people of Quebec. The signatories of the letter mention the mobilization against Energy East and recall the promises of the Trudeau government in terms of climate, environment and First Nations rights.
Among the 40 signatories are: Alternatives, Quebec Association for Air Pollution Control (AQLPA), Coalition Vigilance Oléoducs (CoVO), Regional Council FTQ Metropolitan Montreal, Eau Secours, Équiterre, Fondation Coule pas chez nous, Fondation Rivers, Greenpeace Canada, Nature Quebec, Climate Reality Canada Project, Quebec Hydrological Vigilance Group (RVHQ), the Quebec Public Service and Public Service Union (SFPQ), 350.org, and many others.
