Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Israel Independence Day
April 18, 2018, Ottawa, Ontario – The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today expressed his joy in celebration of Israel Independence Day, also known as Yom Ha’atzmaut.
“Tonight at sundown, Israelis, Jewish communities, and others in Canada and around the world will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel.
“In 1948, Canada was one of the first countries to formally recognize Israel. Seventy years later, Canada and Israel are united by democratic values and close people-to-people ties. Our two countries remain steadfast allies, close friends, and partners in many international organizations.

“Canada is proud to stand with Israel. We will continue to oppose efforts to isolate Israel internationally, and work to expand the trade and security relationship between our two countries. Canada will always stand up against anti-Semitism and hate in all its forms, wherever it arises. On this important milestone in the history of the homeland for the Jewish people, Canada reiterates its commitment to work toward lasting peace for all people in the region.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, Sophie and I wish everyone celebrating Israel Independence Day a Yom Ha’atzmaut Sameach. Shalom!” said the Honourable Canada PM Justin Trudeau.
