    Reinforcing the Animal Management Regulation

Additional animal patrol will travel the streets starting Monday

Montreal, July 15, 2016 – The Mayor of Montreal, Denis Coderre, with Ms. Anie Samson, Vice President of the Executive Committee of the City of Montreal and responsible for public safety and citizen services, confirm adding an additional animal patrol in the territory of Montreal that will travel to ensure regulatory compliance throughout the territory, particularly with regard to the animal on leash. This will be achieved in collaboration with the officials of SPVM.

“In June, I made a commitment to amend the Regulations on animal control to ban pit bull type dogs on the whole territory. I then announced the establishment of an additional canine unit. On Monday, a game Patrol will enter service to travel around the city streets. In collaboration with the SPVM, the patrol will issue findings of violations of the dog owners who do not have their license or who do not keep their dog on a leash, ” said Mayor Denis Coderre.

“The message we are sending is clear: in Montreal, it is mandatory to save the dogs. Currently, only 14% of the 150,000 dogs in the territory of the City of Montreal are recorded. With the strengthening of the regulation and adding a patrol, the goal is to save all the dogs. Dog owners have recently been arrested and I trust they will adopt new behaviors. The new patrol wants an additional and direct way to reach the owners in parks and public areas,” said Ms. Samson.

How to get a license for the animal?

To get the identification tag, call 311 to find out the regulations that apply in your district or go directly into an Access Montreal office. In several districts, it is possible to get the identification tag in some pet partner organizations and veterinary clinics.

All boroughs of Montreal require an annual permit for dogs and the majority is also required for cats, even if they are kept indoors. Information is also available online at http://ville.montreal.qc.ca/animaux (French) or http://ville.montreal.qc.ca/animals (English).

When saving a pet, it is important to have proof of sterilization with you and, if applicable, the number of the microchip. This information is useful and allows in certain districts to benefit from reduced costs. The animal is then entered in the registers of pets City and identification tag is issued.

Wearing the identification tag is mandatory for all dogs. Owners who do not comply with this requirement will face a fine of up to $ 250 in case of control.

The new regulation will be amended and adopted by the City Council in September.

Certain particularly aggressive dog breeds will be banned, such as pit bulls, with progressive and transitional measures for existing dogs (wear a muzzle in public, sterilization and microchipping).

There will be implementation of measures to ensure the compliance of backyards from the owners of the pitbulls and other dangerous dogs to ensure the safety of the neighborhood.

Furthermore, the guide for ‘Living in Montreal with his animal’ is given free to all owners of animals in Montreal when registering or with th eproof of registration of their pet in offices Access Montreal and with partners. Its digital version is available online at www.ville.montreal.qc.ca/animaux site.
