‘Tarang’ performed at
Lohri Celebrations 2018 at Hindu Mandir, DDO
January 13, 2018 – January 13th marks the harvest festival in Punjab, Lohri. ‘Lo’ means ‘Take and ‘Hari’ means ‘God’, hence the meaning – I surrender myself to god. Notoriously spiritual Indians start with Holika Dahan puja that leads into the celebrations.

Lohri 2018 was celebrated with much fervor at the Hindu Mandir, DDO. Despite the Arctic weather, more than 300 people gathered to enjoy the auspicious evening.
The Lohri bonfire was lit outside where people roasted some peanuts as well as ended up warming themselves in the freezing cold.
‘Tarang’ group sang with great zest, the punjabi folk Lohri songs. Gourav Sharma, Amita Khanna, Anju Chopra, Manju Chopra, Mohini Kocher, Meena Gulati, Monika Spolia and others sang accompanied by Ravi on dholak and Sanjeev Sharma on keyboard. Mr. Sethi was the dedicated DJ.
Punjabis, on this day, build bonfires roasting peanuts and jaggery on it. Similar to Halloween, small groups come to the door, sing a song and ask for lohri. In return, they receive peanuts, jaggery, raivdhian and gacchak (peanut brittle). Special dishes made on this day are rice pudding made with sugarcane juice.
Makki ki roti (corn bread) was served with saag (green mustard puree) in langar afterwards. Yum! Peanuts and ravrian (jaggery and sesame) were distributed to everyone. Everyone enjoyed the evening.
