| Montréal, October 14th, 2021 – In order to answer legal questions from the Quebec population, the Young Bar of Montreal’s (YBM) Legal Helpline is back for the 37th edition! On October 23rd and 24th, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., volunteer lawyers will answer citizens’ questions by phone and provide free legal advice as well as information on the various methods of dispute prevention and resolution processes available to them. The YBM offers this service in partnership with the Barreau du Québec and the CAIJ. |
A third edition that focuses on the prevention and resolution of disputesWhether through conciliation or mediation, participatory justice is a good way to resolve several issues. “Access to justice is a priority for the YBM and the success of the Legal Helpline is a testament to the fact that young lawyers are at the center of access to justice. The objectives of the last editions are in line with the Québec Participatory Justice Day by allowing citizens to learn about their rights and obligations, while encouraging them to actively cooperate in resolving their conflicts”, declares Mtre Mathieu Jacques, President of the YBM. The Bar Foundation will also launch the Guide to Dispute Prevention and Resolution in Business on October 21. |

| Free legal service for the publicAs the initiator of the project, the YBM offers this service twice a year since 2018 with the support of more than a hundred volunteer lawyers from across the province, with the collaboration of the Young Bar of Quebec (YBQ) and the Association des Jeunes Barreaux de Région (AJBR). In 2020-2021, more than 4,000 calls from citizens were received due to this initiative. The most frequently asked questions are related to family law, neighbourly relations, consumer goods, labour and management of estates. “Improving access to justice is a central priority for the Barreau du Québec. This is why, once again this year, we are proud to be partners in this great initiative of the Young Bar of Montreal. In addition to providing free legal advice, the Clinic allows citizens to become familiar with dispute prevention and resolution methods, which are part of the solutions for improving access to justice for all,” said the Bâtonnière du Québec, Mtre Catherine Claveau. “More than ever present at the center of the legal community, the CAIJ is delighted to act as a partner of the YBM’s Legal Clinic! Once again this year, we are proud to make our infrastructure and information resources available to the volunteer lawyers so that they can adequately answer the questions of the population. This event is in perfect correlation with the CAIJ’s mission, which is to make legal information accessible to its members at all times and in all places,” said Mtre Nancy J. Trudel, Executive Director of the CAIJ. Access to JusticeFounded in 1898, the YBM represents 5 000 lawyers with ten years or less of practice in Montréal; making it one of the largest associations of young lawyers in the world, in terms of numbers for one city. Its mission is twofold: Firstly, it ensures to defend and promote the interests of its members. Secondly, it provides pro bono consulting services and legal information to various segments of the population and organizes charitable activities.
