    Living Legend Birju Maharaj in Montreal

              Living Legend Birju Maharaj, the renowned Kathak dancer from India is coming to Montreal. Saswati Sen and Sudeshna Maulik (Dancer, Choreographer, Artistic Director of Montreal Kathak Ensemble) are the main organizers who have worked very hard to bring Pandit birju Maharaj here. Sudeshna Maulik is his disciple.

           Pt. Birju Maharaj has choreographed dances in some of the Bollywood classic hit movies like “Devdas”, “Viswaroopam”,  “Bajirao Mastani”.

              He will be here on June 8, 2016  from  7pm to 9:30pm at place des Arts – Cinquieme Salle at 175 rue St-Catherine West, Montreal, Quebec.

              A workshop of Kathak dance by Pt. Birju Maharaj and the troupe is being organized on June 7, 2016 from 5pm to 9pm at Patro le Prevost located at 7355 Ave Christophe-Colomb, Montreal, Québec  H2R 2S5 (Tel:(514) 273-8535).

    About Pandit Birju Maharaj

    Birju Maharaj is a leading exponent and torch-bearer of the Kalka-Bindadin gharana of Lucknow. He is a wonderful singer with a strong grip over, Thumri, Dadra, Bhajan and Ghazals. He gave his first performance at the age of seven. Pandit Birju Maharaj is not only a Kathak dancer but also a sensitive poet and a captivating orator.
    Pandit Birju Maharaj has won several honors and awards including the coveted Padma Vibhushan (1986). He has also been awarded with the Kalidas Samman by the Government of Madhya Pradesh, Soviet Land Nehru Award, Sangam Kala Award. In 2002, He was the recipient of the Lata Mangeshkar Puraskaar. Pandit Birju Maharaj has also been conferred with the honorary Doctorate degrees from Banaras Hindu University, and Khairagarh University.
